New Sprite Cans Feature Lyrics From Drake, Biggie, Nas & Rakim

Because, after all, you get pretty thirsty when you're running through the 6ix with your woes

At first, it seemed disrespectful to me to use the lyrics of slain hip hop legend Christopher Wallace a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G. (a.k.a. Biggie Smalls a.k.a. Frank White), but then it occurred to me that if such an opportunity to make mo' money - and thus deal with mo' problems - presented itself when he was alive. Puff Daddy would have likely jumped at the chance to partner with Sprite even back then.

Just as the proprietors of Biggie's estate, Faith Evans and his mother Voletta Wallace, gave consent for a single line of Biggie's lyrics to be used in Sprite's new campaign "Obey Your Verse": a collection of limited-edition cans and bottles that also brandish lyrics from Drake, Nas, Rakim, spanning a quarter century of hip hop history.

"When I wrote these lyrics, I never imagined my fans would someday have the opportunity to enjoy a can of Sprite and experience my art in a totally original way," Nas said in a statement. Lyrics from Nas will include "living longevity to the destiny" from his duet with Lauryn Hill, "If I Ruled the World," as well as "know yourself, know your worth" from Drake's 2014 anthem "0 to 100."

If you'll recall, Sprite was one of the first brands to embrace urban culture, running an ad in 1986 featuring rapper Kurtis Blow, and since working with ball players like Grant Hill, and other rap stars like Missy Elliot and A Tribe Called Quest.
