Israeli Makes Eurovision Finals for First Time in 5 Years

16-year-old Nadav Guedj has become Israel's first contestant in five years to make it to the Eurovision finals.

Guedj impressed judges at the semi-finals Thursday night with a rendition of his song "Golden Boy." He was met with loud applause in Vienna, Austria after his performance. In fact, numerous betting sites are rating him in the top ten for Saturday’s finals.

Guedj will be competing against 19 contestants from Australia, Azerbaijan, Poland, Latvia and Montenegro for the top spot.

Guedji may have an upper hand as he has experience with large contests. He was the youngest performer on Israel's “The Next Star” and came to win that season.

The man who penned Gudeji’s golden song, Doron Medali, believes the Israeli contestant will go all the way, according to Haaretz. Medali also believes it is about time the country gets some recognition.

“We got what we deserved," Medali said, "to hear the audience chant ‘Israel, Israel’ proves that [the perception that the world] hates Israel is nonsense. If you send out love to the world, the world’s returns the love."

Israel has been struggling to make the finals since 2010 even though they’ve had competitors every year.

Eurovision contestants from Israel have a history of overcoming hurdles. In 2013, Moran Mazer was under heavy guard after protests broke out. Even journalists who have covered the event have faced threats. Even earlier this season, Israel faced some upset over the contest when Hungary presented their debatable song choice.

Israel has won Eurovision three times since they first entered in 1978. The last time was Dana International’s “Diva” performance in 1998, which you can watch below, for nostalgia's sake:
