Top 20 Under 40 – Jessica Green

Shalom Life is proud to present our 5th annual Top 20 Under 40 list. Over the next 20 days, we will showcase 20 individuals of diverse talents and backgrounds that have made a significant contribution to their field both locally and globally. From entrepreneurs to philanthropists, entertainers to doctors, this list places a spotlight on a small sampling of the spectacular, innovative, and passionate Jews that call Toronto home.

Top 20 Under 40: Jessica Green

Age: 30

Jessica Green is the founder of Cursive PR, a digital media company that focuses on corporate communications, community management, email marketing, web development, search engine performance, analytics/insights, and writing/editing.

Founded four years ago in what Green describes as an “accident”, Cursive PR has launched Green’s career and landed her on several “ Best of” lists.

“It started out as an accident. I was helping a friend write a book while sharing office space at my family’s business. I stuck my nose into their marketing department and learned a ton in a very short period of time. I realized that I wasn’t so terrible at getting a message across, so I decided to brand myself as a PR professional. From there, I just ran with it, sticking my nose into other business opportunities along the way,” Green explained in an interview with Shalom Life.

Cursive PR helps brands discover untapped digital opportunities that “inspire conversations and convert fans to ambassadors.” Green describes her business as “a communications quarterback for businesses that don’t want to be online but know they have to be.”

Green was featured on WXN’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada list, received the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and won The Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario’s Property Management Advertisement Award for both Social Media and Corporate Branding and the Community Service Award of Excellence.

In addition to Cursive PR, Green is also the head of fundraising for the Corsage Project, a nonprofit organization under The Children’s Aid Foundation umbrella “that works in partnership with the Children’s Aid Foundation to provide formal attire- free of charge- and educational bursaries to Toronto-area students in need of a boost.”

Described by her friends as “persistent”, Green continues to learn and grow on a daily basis.

“ ‘No’ generally means ‘Change how you’re asking’. I typically have a plan that includes a beginning, middle and end, but I’m always ready to rethink, readjust or refocus along the way.”

She finds inspiration in every aspect of her life, understanding whole-heartedly that everyone has something valuable to contribute.

“I’ll be mentored by anyone who will have me, regardless of age, education and experience. I’ve come to realize that the more I listen, the more value I add as a friend, family member and business owner. My first real boss, Linda Lewis, activist, journalist and former Editor-in-Chief of More Magazine, had the greatest influence on me as a professional. She taught me the imperative of proofreading and finding humour in absurdity,” Green shares.

Green doesn’t consider herself particularly observant, but believes that Judaism has made a very positive impact on her upbringing and current value system.

“I’m not particularly observant. However, my work ethic and perspective are definitely coloured by Jewish ideals. The idea of an enslaved people striving for their freedom with hard work and commitment to each other and their shared values is a lesson for all people, not just the Jews. My whole family is driven by the spirit of tikkun olam. Our business is improving neighborhoods for the benefit of the communities we serve by creating opportunity and safe surroundings. My small role at The Children’s Aid Foundation is just another example of that spirit.”

When she’s not working, Green enjoys traveling to Rome and Israel, watching ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, listening to Leonard Cohen, going to see Toronto’s musical theatre offerings (especially the “impressive productions” at The Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company), and eating the Lalibela Platter at Ossington and Bloor’s Lalibela Ethiopian restaurant.

Any final words of advice for individuals looking to get into her field?

“Be relentless and think fearlessly. Oftentimes, “the worst” isn’t that bad. I’d take 100 risks a day and fail at 99 before sitting stagnant in my office doing the same thing for 20 years. “
