With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it’s that time of year to reflect on love had, love lost, and possibilities of love to come. While not all love stories are made to last, others are not meant to forget. We all enjoyed some of the most iconic romances of the 21st century, watching them together on TV from the comfort of our living rooms, or seeing them on the big screen. But with so many shows and movies, it can be hard to pick your favorite.

In the spirit of St. Valentine, we at Shalom Life have counted down the list of the ten most iconic fictional Jewish romances. And, for the sake of clarification, only one of the characters need be Jewish to make out list.

So sit back, bust out that heat-shaped box of chocolates, and enjoy.

10.

Jane Smith and John Smith

From Mr. & Mrs. Smith

The spy couple that everyone wanted to be, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, as played by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, was one of the funniest on screen couples of 2005. It’s the story of two assassins who, thinking they’re marrying a regular civilian, end up marrying their own competition. While their marriage starts off passionate, it goes through a slump as they conceal their identities from each other until, thanks to a set up by their agencies, they have to try and kill one another. Ultimately, their attempted murder helps to breath a little life into their marriage, and sends them down the path to marital bliss.

9.

Helen and Morty Seinfeld

From Seinfeld

The couple that reminded generations of TV audiences of their grandparents, Helen and Morty Seinfeld, as played by Liz Sheridan and Barney Martin, are one of the more memorable couples of the show, and for good reason. Despite an onslaught of comical frustrations, this older Seinfeld couple always sticks by each other and, through thick and thin, stay in love. Although their relationship isn’t one of passion, it is one built to stand the test of time… not to mention Jerry and uncle Leo’s crazy antics.

8.

Rachel Berry and Finn Hudson

From GLEE

What happens when the brainy Broadway-inspired girl falls in love with the not-so-smart football player? Most of GLEE’s first season, it turns out. Although this couple has a hard time getting together, and face their fair share of up and downs while on air, Rachel and Finn’s romance is one to be envied by younger audiences. What makes this romance all the more passionate is that the on-screen couple, as played by Lea Michele and Cory Monteith, were in love off-screen as well. However the romance wasn’t to last when, tragically, Monteith passed away in 2013.

7.

Charlotte York and Harry Goldenblatt

From Sex and the City

One of the sweetest TV romances to date, the Sex and the City pairing of Charlotte York and Harry Goldenblatt, as played by Kristin Davis and Evan Handler, took audiences by surprise. After her “perfect” marriage with a Mr. Trey MacDougal ends in divorce, Charlotte ends up falling in love with her divorce lawyer, Harry. The two make an unexpectedly sweet couple, proving to audiences that outward appearances aren’t everything. The TV couple went on to be married in a less than perfect, but hilarious, Jewish ceremony and they had two daughters.

6.

Tevye and Golde

From Fiddler on the Roof

This iconic Jewish story about matchmaking, discrimination, and what it means to truly be in love, is the source for one of the most famous fictitious Jewish couples in history. The relationship between Tevye and Golde is complex to say the least. Although the two are together as part of an arranged marriage, and disliked each other at first, they come to deeply love and respect each other and want that same kind of loving, and stable, relationship for their daughters. While their love story isn’t the main one of the unforgettable story, it’s definitely an important part and teaches audiences that while love at first sight is intense, love built on trust and hard work lasts.
