Clint Eastwood’s war drama, ‘American Sniper’ was announced as a contender for Best Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards and topped US box offices this past weekend with a record-smashing $90 million. Although audiences and some critics have nothing but praise for the Bradley Cooper starrer, a couple Hollywood heavyweights are not impressed.
‘American Sniper’ tells the story of Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL and most lethal marksman in US military history. Supporters of the film believe it explores the horrible toll war takes on veterans, while critics think its glorifying war.
“American Sniper kind of reminds me of the movie that’s showing in the third act of Inglourious Basterds,” ‘The Interview’ actor, Seth Rogen, tweeted referring to a fake Nazi propaganda movie seen in Quentin Tarantino’s film.
‘Bowling For Columbine’ documentary filmmaker, Michael Moore, joined the conversation, writing, “My uncle killed by sniper in WW2. We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren’t heroes. And invaders r worse.”
But, as previously mentioned, not everyone is disparaging ‘American Sniper’. Jan Fonda called it “powerful” while Newt Gingrich wrote, “Michael Moore should spend a few weeks with ISIS and Boko Haram. Then he might appreciate @AmericanSniper. I am proud of our defenders.”
