The ‘Girls’ creator says Israelis are “just as lost and kooky” as Americans

‘Girls’ creator, Lena Dunham, who describes herself as a “half-Jew and half-WASP” is currently doing the press circuit to promote the upcoming season of her popular HBO show.

While speaking with ‘Good Evening with Guy Pines’, she dished about the Jewish characters on ‘Girls’ and her thoughts about Israeli youth culture.

Prior to her immense success with ‘Girls’, Dunham established herself in the indie film world with 2010’s ‘Tiny Furniture’. The film’s first international screening was in Israel, which marked another first… her first visit to the country.

“I think I thought because Israel has this fascinating cultural difference — of having to spend time in the military right after high school — that there would be an increased seriousness…But even though there’s this impressive discipline thing, they’re just as lost and kooky as the youth in America,” Dunham explained during the interview.

Judaism plays a significant role in he current HBO hit as well. Dunham’s character, Hannah Horvath, is half-Jewish and half-Christian (just like her), while Shoshanna Shapiro (Zosia Mamet) plays a Jewish American princess.

Dunham explains what Jewish American Princesses (JAP’s) are to Guy Pine, saying they are “a sort of coddled New York girl with a certain kind of neurosis found in Jewish households and Shoshanna is a good example of that.”

‘Girls’ premieres with back-to-back episodes on January 12th.
