Billy Joel Announces Madison Square Garden Residency

Musician residencies are something fans are familiar with in Las Vegas. Popular artists, who are in extremely high demand, will ink deals with casinos for an extended engagement to perform nightly concerts.

However, in an unprecedented move, ‘Piano Man’ Billy Joel has announced the first-ever residency outside of Las Vegas. At a press conference on Tuesday, Joel explained that he will be playing at New York City’s Madison Square Garden once a month indefinitely. The once-a-month residency scheduling is also a first.

"Playing Madison Square Garden is an experience that never gets old," Joel said.

"A show a month at the Garden for as long as there's demand means more opportunities to connect with music fans and provides a unique and memorable show every time we play here."

The residency will officially begin on January 27th, with additional shows already confirmed for February 3rd, March 21st, April 18th and May 9th.

At the press conference, Madison Square Garden officials welcomed Joel to the family, unveiling a new Billy Joel MSG logo next to ones for the Knicks, the Rangers and the Liberty,

"Billy, having you as our music franchise feels a little like having the Pope as your parish priest," said MSG Executive Chairman James Dolan.

“I'm truly an admirer and I grew up with your music, too, and so I'm thrilled to death."

Joel returned to touring and playing live shows after a three-year hiatus earlier this year. He is scheduled to perform at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center on New Year’s Eve and play four shows in Florida in January. Details concerning his intent to continue playing outside Madison Square Gardens once his residency begins are unclear at this time.
