Eccentric songwriter, Daniel Johnston, has been a prominent cult figure for several years. His work usually appeals to outcasts, underdogs, art and musical snobs, so it came as quite a surprise when mainstream artists Mac Miller and Lana Del Ray expressed interest in Johnston’s latest project.

Earlier this month, ‘Hi, How Are You’ was launched on Kickstarter. It’s a short film directed by Gabriel Sunday and starring Johnston. Both Miller and Del Ray donated $10,000, making them executive producers on the project. The rapper and pop singer reached out to Sunday, expressing their support and offering any help necessary.

‘Hi, How Are You’ stars Johnston, with Sunday playing a younger version of him. It explores the often misunderstood mind of Johnston, exploring his artwork and music, literally bringing his illustrations to life.

When the Kickstarter campaign first launched on November 12th, the production team was hoping to raise $35,000 to cover post-production costs including CGI and animation, but after sending out the link to Johnston’s mailing list, they received such a positive response (and reached their financing goal in less than week) that they may decide to expand on their original idea.

"Mac's a huge Daniel Johnston fan, and he told me he's always trying to talk to people about Daniel but is sick of having to explain who he is," Sunday told The Hollywood Reporter.

"I'll never forget the first time I heard Daniel Johnston," says Miller. "When I heard about the movie, I immediately wanted to be involved. One, because for creative reasons I am so excited to work with the team who has already been working hard and do what I can to make this movie as good as it can be. But, two, I want to do anything I can to re-create that same moment I had in discovering Daniel Johnston for as many people as possible. Few people have approached arts with as much rawness and pure emotion than a Daniel Johnston. Few people deserve to have a legendary legacy. Dan is one of them. I'm excited to take people inside of his head and show them what that world is like."

"[Johnston]'s fighting the long crazy fight," says Del Rey. "He's a genius. And more human beings have to know about his crazy good songs and talent. His spirit is golden. This film will only prove to show that."

For his contribution, Miller will be receiving Johnston’s ‘Keep on Rocking’ chord organ. The rapper expressed his excitement about the project via Twitter.

“Me and @LanaDelRay are both executive producers on a movie. That’s tight,” he posted.

The Kickstarter campaign runs until December 8th. Sunday is hoping for a March 2015 release.
