Three German film students have become overnight Internet sensations with the release of their controversial fake Mercedes ad depicting Hitler being murdered as a young child.

Using the slogan, ‘Mercedes: Detects dangers before they happen’, Tobias Haase, Jan Mettler, and Lydia Lohse explore what would happen if they applied Mercedes’ smart technology to human scenarios.

“Mercedes sells its cars on smart technology that prevents accidents from happening… We wanted to pose the question of what might happen if technology had a soul,” Haase says.

In the one minute fake advert, a small quiet town at the turn of the century is displayed. Men are in the fields digging potatoes and children play happily on empty, rural roads.

A modern-21st century, sleek Mercedes drives onto the scene, using it’s advanced brake technology to stop instantly as two girls playing hopscotch appear in front of the vehicle. Moments later, a young boy is seen playing with a kite, only this time, the car doesn’t stop or even slow down. The child is knocked to the ground, presumably dead, and left in the middle of the road.

A woman is the distance screams “Adolf!” as an image of an adult Adolf Hitler quickly flashes on screen before returning to the young child sprawled on the dirt road in the shape of a swastika. A street sign is also revealed reading “Braunau-am-Inn”, Hitler’s birth place.

Many German publications and international viewers have praised the short film, while Mercedes is quite displeased. They asked the students to add a disclaimer reading “This is a film school’s submission. There exists no past or current affiliation to Mercedes Benz or Daimler AG.”

What do you think? Did the film students take their message a little too far? Or did they raise an interesting debate? What if machines had souls and could make important decisions that could impact our future? What if we could really go back in time and prevent certain events from happening? Watch below and send off your thoughts in the comments section.
