Michael Moore Throws His Weight Behind Palestinian Filmmaker
Director of Oscar-nominated film detained by U.S. immigration
A Palestinian filmmaker who co-directed the Academy Award nominated “5 Broken Cameras,” is getting a much needed helping hand from none other than controversial American documentary director, and noted activist, Michael Moore.
Moore, the man behind “Bowling for Columbine,” among many other highly controversial films, threw his considerable weight behind Palestinian director Emad Burnat who, along with his wife and 8-year-old son, was reportedly detained at Los Angeles International Airport on February 19, as he tried – unsuccessfully - to enter the U.S. to attend the Oscars.
Burnat and his family were eventually released, according to Moore, but not before they were held for 90 minute by immigration officials.
And, there is little doubt that this situation just may end up being fodder for Moore’s next documentary, based on the fact that he tweeted the scenario to his close to 1.5 million followers.
According to Moore, he contacted Oscar officials, who got in touch with immigration officials who ultimately confirmed Emad's invite to the February 24th Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles.
"After 1.5 hrs, they decided to release him & his family & told him he could stay in LA for the week & go to the Oscars. Welcome to America," Moore tweeted.
