The long-gestating biopic of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis may be getting a second chance at life, with Natalie Portman in the title role. Jackie was originally to be directed by Darren Aronofsky, with then-partner Rachel Weisz playing the First Lady back in 2010. However, the couple went their separate ways that year, and said project was shelved. Enter stage left, Ms. Portman, who according to Deadline likes the original script by Noah Oppenheim, and is being wooed by Fox Searchlight.

Oppenheim’s story centers on Jackie Kennedy, during the initial few days after her husband was assassinated. Suffice to say, the subject matter will be heavy. Portman is no stranger to heavy, dark drama, case-in-point, her Oscar turn in the Aronofsky directed, Black Swan, so it’s understandable why the studio wants her onboard. However, evidently the actress’ involvement is dependent on what director is helming the film, so perhaps Fox Searchlight will be courting Aronofsky next.

Portman has been a busy woman over the past wee while, with three films slated for 2013 – the sequel to Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Terrance Malick’s Knight of Cups, and a second untitled Malick project. The 31-year-old also appeared in a sultry Miss Dior ad, earlier this month.
