The Israeli inspired Showtime drama, Homeland, came up as the big winner at the Emmy Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles. The espionage thriller, based on the Israeli TV show called Hatufim, won the Showtime network its first Best Drama award.

The television series Mad Men swept the Best Drama category for the last four years. It seemed as if no other show would ever have a chance at the coveted prize.

“This is the biggest night of my career,” Showtime executive producer Alex Gansa said.

Coming away with six awards, including Best Actress for Claire Danes, Best Actor for Damian Lewis, and Best Writing Award for Israeli Hatufim creator, Gideon Raff, which he shared with Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon, co-writers on the show.

It was a big night for the Jews of Hollywood altogether. Lena Dunham, creator and writer of the hit HBO comedy Girls, based on the life experiences of a Jewish twenty-something and her friends in Manhattan, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Larry David, Mayim Biali, Louis C.K and Max Greenfield of New Girl fame, were also all recognized in the comedy category.
