Hong Kong has long been regarded as one of the most expensive cities ion the planet to reside in. That notion was further confirmed, when an apartment in a residential building designed by award-winning architect, Frank Gehry, fetched a whopping HK$430 million ($55 million US). The 12-storey Opus Hong Kong is the famed architect’s first residential building in Asia, and is situated in one of the city’s most affluent areas, known as The Peak.

The 6,755-square-foot apartment encompasses the entire 8th floor of the building, and based on the sales price, sold for a paltry $8000 a square foot. All the building’s 12 luxury units enjoy breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour, and Hong Kong’s vast skyline.

“I designed the building for Hong Kong, to respond to the unique conditions of the city. You wouldn’t build this anywhere else,” Gehry said.

“We embarked on this project with Frank Gehry with the intention of producing an exceptionally rare work of architecture. These transactions demonstrate the market’s appreciation for our achievement,” Martin Cubbon, CEO of Swire Properties Ltd.

Gehry’s latest project was to design Facebook’s mammoth new campus headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
