The 2012 Paralympic Games will kick off today in London, England, just a few weeks after the conclusion of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

This year, Israel will send a delegation of 25 athletes to represent their home country in a variety of nine different Paralympic sports. This past month, these athletes met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who encouraged them to build on their 2008 success of winning six medals in Beijing.

“What you demand of yourselves, nobody demands of you,” the PM told the delegation. “I hope that you bring home medals – but from my point of view, you already have.”

To preview the Israeli representation in London, Shalom Life proudly presents the second part of a list of all Israeli athletes competing at the Paralympic Games. Click here for part one.

Dror Cohen, Benny Wexler and Arnon Efrati

The three-member Sonar sailing crew returns to the Paralympics eight years after their gold medal performance in Athens, Greece. Wexler lost one of his hands during combat in Lebanon while Efrati lost part of his arm while fighting in the Yom Kippur War.

Tel Aviv Beit Halochem sailing duo Shimon Ben-Yaacov and Hagar Zehavi will be competing together in the Paralympic SKUD 18 competition.Zehavi is a paraplegic, while her partner Ben-Yaacov was severely wounded in his leg during the 1982 Lebanon War while serving as an officer in the elite infantry unit of “Shaldag.” According to the regulations of the SKUD 18 model, there must be at least one woman on the boat’s sailing team and one of the sailors must be severely disabled.
