As Israeli President Shimon Peres likes to say, “We used to be the people of the book. Now we're the people of the Facebook.”

Like every other aspect of the world, Jewish life has quickly adapted to the internet. Whether it’s culture, religion or politics, Judaism has shifted to the virtual world where almost everything is dominated today by social media.

Many have attempted to make their mark on the internet with Jewish-themed blogs, videos, and news sites. Shalom Life is proud to present the most successful of these social media endeavours.

#1: Jews News

The undisputed champion of Jewish social media is none other than Jews News, with a Facebook following of 330,000 “likes.”

But unlike others on this list, Jews News does not yet have its own operational website. It also differs from other popular Jewish social media sites in that it seemingly sprung out of nowhere.

Shalom Life interviewed Jews News founder Eliyokim Cohen earlier this month, who told us that the page was started in 2010 but basically went untouched until January 2012. With 8,000 “likes” at the time, the page has since grown drastically.

There are currently over 200,000 people “talking about” Jews News according to Facebook, and its weekly reach is 7,000,000 per week. The total reach is close to 80,000,000. These figures are by far the largest of any Jewish Facebook page.

Jews News is updated almost hourly, often with an article about Judaism or Israel from various websites, or with a funny or unique photo. Cohen, based in Israel is the primary owner and controller of the page, while his friend in California will takes over after he goes to sleep.

A website (jewsnews.co.il) is currently under construction and will be functional this October, says Cohen.

Given the efforts he is putting into the page and its current numbers, Cohen expects to hit 1,000,000 “likes” in the coming months.
