Meet your Jewish and Israeli Olympic Athletes: Part 3

The opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games is just hours away! Today finally marks the start of the 30th summer Olympiad, set to take place in London, England.

Jews from around the world, including New Zealand, the U.S., Australia, Canada, and of course Israel will be taking part as they each compete on behalf of their respective countries.

To preview the Jewish representation at London 2012, Shalom Life proudly presents the third and final part of a three-day series, featuring all Jewish and Israeli athletes competing at the games (click here for part one and here for part two). Today, we take a look at the Jewish athletes all around the world who are competing for their respective countries at the Games.

Gymnastics (Rythmic)

Julie Zetlin – U.S. (individual all-around)

A gold medalist at the 2011 Pan-American Games in Mexico, Zetlin will be making her Olympic debut in London after the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) awarded her a wild-card berth to compete at the Games in February. The 22-year-old has been a member of the U.S. junior and senior national rhythmic gymnastics teams since 2004. Zetlin captured the all-around title at the 2010 U.S. National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, along with first-place finishes in hoop, ball and ribbon. She will be the first rhythmic gymnast to represent Team USA at Olympics since 2004.

The individual all-around qualification stage will take place August 9 and 10 from noon to 1:18 p.m. The final round is scheduled on August 11 from 1:30 to 3:10.

Gymnastics (Artistic)

Alexandra “Aly” Raisman – U.S. (women’s qualification, women’s team)

18-year-old Aly Raisman is one of the key Jewish athletes around the world to watch in London 2012, not only for her strong gymnastic talents, but also for her famous routine choreographed to the tune of “Hava Nagila,” which Raisman has vowed to perform at the Olympics. Earlier this month, finished third at the Olympic trials in San Jose, Calif., to secure her spot on the American Olympic team while posting the highest scores for beam and floor. Raisman won a bronze medal on the floor exercise at the 2011 World Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo, Japan and also captained the U.S. gold medal-winning squad at the World Championships. As of mid-July, Raisman has won eight bronze medals, six silvers and four golds in competitions in which she has competed on behalf of the U.S.

The women’s artistic gymnastics qualification will take place July 29 at 9:30 a.m. The team final is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on July 31.

Trampoline

Steven Gluckstein – U.S. (men’s trampoline)

Gluckstein, 22, will make his Olympic debut at the London 2012 Summer Games. Gluckstein captured the first U.S. Champion title of his career at the Visa Championships in 2009 and also earned the first U.S. gold medal in trampoline at a World Cup event by winning the synchronized trampoline title along with his partner, Logan Dooley, at Trampoline World Cup in Belgium that same year. Gluckstein is a three-time U.S. champion.

The men’s trampoline qualification round takes place August 3 at 2 p.m. and 2:44 p.m. The final round will get underway at 3:26 p.m.
