Shalom Life previews the Jewish representation at the upcoming London games

The opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games is just hours away! Today finally marks the start of the 30th summer Olympiad, set to take place in London, England.

Jews from around the world, including New Zealand, the U.S., Australia, Canada, and of course Israel will be taking part as they each compete on behalf of their respective countries.

To preview the Jewish representation at London 2012, Shalom Life proudly presents the third and final part of a three-day series, featuring all Jewish and Israeli athletes competing at the games (click here for part one and here for part two). Today, we take a look at the Jewish athletes all around the world who are competing for their respective countries at the Games.

Athletics

Steven Solomon – Australia (men’s 4 x 400 m relay and men’s 400 m)


Sprinter Steven Solomon is a two-time defending Australian 400 metres champion. Specializing in the 400 metre dash, he won a bronze medal at the World Junior Athletics Championships in Barcelona earlier this month and was a member of the Australian team that placed fourth in the 4 x 400 metre relay race. The 19-year-old took up the sport just two and a half years ago and has already performed remarkably, including a personal best of 45:54 seconds in the 400 metre race in April. This will be Solomon’s first Olympics.

The first round of the men’s 400 metre dash will take place August 4 at 10:35 a.m. The semifinals are scheduled the following day at 8:40 p.m. and final will occur August 6 at 9:30 p.m. The first round of the men’s 4 x 400 metre relay will take place August 9 at 11:35 a.m. and the finals are scheduled the following day at 9:20 p.m.

Fencing

Tim Morehouse – U.S. (me’s individual sabre, men’s team sabre)


Tim Morehouse returns to the Olympic Games for the second time after earning a silver medal in men's sabre as a member of the United States fencing team during the 2008 summer games in Beijing. He was previously selected as an alternate on the U.S. fencing team in Athens 2004. Morehouse won seven Pan Am titles between 2005 and 2007 and seven-time World Cup medals in his career. The 33-year-old is also a two-time individual U.S. National Champion and was the top ranked U.S. men’s sabre fencer from 2008-2011.

After receiving a bye in the round of 64, Morehouse will face Russian opponent Veniamin Reshetnikov on July 29 at 12:30 p.m. in the round of 32 of men’s individual sabre. The U.S. men’s team sabre will face Russia in their quarterfinals matchup on August 3 at 11:30 a.m. The semifinals will kick off one hour later and the final match is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. that day.

Beach Volleyball

Josh Binstock – Canada (men’s beach volleyball)


31-year-old Josh Binstock is the lone Jewish representative on Canada’s Olympic delegation. The Richmond Hill, Ont.-native qualified for London 2012 along with his Olympic teammate Martin Reader. Previously, Binstock won two straight Canadian National Championships with teammate Matt Zbyszewski, and also won bronze and silver medals during the competitions part of the 2009 Norceca Beach Volleyball Circuit. The pair helped the Canadian men’s team win the finals of the Continental Cup qualifying tournament to earn a berth at the London Games. Binstock’s also won a silver medal at the 2001 Canada Games, three under-24 national championships and placed ninth at the 2012 Fédération Internationale de Volleyball World Tour. This will be Binstock’s first Olympics.

The preliminary round of the men’s beach volleyball tournament runs from July 28 to August 2. Binstock and Reader will first face British duo John Garcia-Thompson and Steve Grotowski on July 28 at 4:30 p.m. Their next match-up is against Norwegians Tarjei Viken Skarlund and Martin Spinnangr on July 30 at 11 a.m. The Canadians will conclude the preliminary round against Brazilian pair Ricardo Santos and Pedro Cunhaon August 1 at 8 p.m. The rest of the men’s beach volleyball tournament schedule can be viewed here.
