#35- SETH ROGEN
Age: 29
Hometown: Vancouver, Canada
Known for: The 40-Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, The Green Hornet
Why he’s a JILF: Seth was raised in Vancouver by “radical Jewish socialists” that met at an Israeli kibbutz. Seth knew from a young age that he wanted a career in comedy, joking “as soon as I realized you could be funny as a job, that was the job I wanted.” Through his teen years (starting at 13), he performed stand up comedies at Bar Mitzvah’s summer camps, and small parties, eventually upgrading to bars and comedy clubs. At the age of 16, Rogen’s parents both lost their jobs. Luckily, he was cast in Judd Apatow’s TV show, Freaks and Geeks, so his entire family relocated to Los Angeles together. Throughout high school, Seth and close friend, Evan Goldberg (they met at Bar Mitzvah classes) wrote and polished the script for Superbad, which Judd Apatow eventually helped to release. Seth’s deadpan humor and relationship with Judd Apatow helped to establish him as one of today’s great comedians. He has written and starred in several successful films including The 40-Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, Superbad, Funny People, and The Green Hornet. Seth is currently in production of The Apocalypse in which he is starring, writing, producing, and directing.
#34- SACHA BARON COHEN
Age: 40
Hometown: London, England
Known for: Ali G, Borat, Bruno, The Dictator
Why he’s a JILF: Sacha was born in London to an Israeli mother and Welsh father in a Jewish household. He doesn’t consider himself a religious Jew, but he speaks fluent Hebrew, lived on a Kibbutz, tries to keep kosher, and occasionally attends synagogue. Sacha’s acting career began while attending Cambridge University, appearing in several plays including Fiddler on the Roof and Cyrano de Bergerac. After university, Sacha worked as a fashion model until he landed a gig as a television presenter for Channel 4 with a video audition in the character of fictional television reporter, Kristo (later developed into Borat). After playing several other characters including Bruno and Ali G on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show, he was given Da Ali G Show. Ali G’s interviews with famous public figures (Ralph Nadar, Donald Trump, Newt Gingrich, and Gore Vidal, to name a few) garnered a lot of controversy and international fame for Sacha. Although he is best known for the stunts his alter ego’s pull, Sacha is a talented comedian, performer, and family man.
#33- ELI ROTH
Age: 39
Hometown: Newton, Massachusetts
Known for: Hostel, Inglourious Basterds, Cabin Fever, 2001 Maniacs
Why he’s a JILF: Eli was raised in a Jewish household in Newton, Mass. After seeing Ridley Scott’s Alien at the age of 8, Eli knew he wanted to be a filmmaker. Before graduating high school, Eli and his brothers made over 50 short films. Eli moved to New York to attend the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. While in New York, Eli made a lot of show biz connections while running producer Frederick Zollo’s office including Camryn Manheim, David Lynch, and Angelo Badalamenti, who helped him in the nascent stages of his career. In 2002, Eli sold his first feature film Cabin Fever to Lionsgate making him a new star in the horror genre. Over the last 10 years, Eli has directed, produced, written, and/or starred in over a dozen films including Hostel, Inglourious Basterds (as ‘The Bear Jew’), Piranha 3D, and Death Proof. Look out for his upcoming film, Endangered Species.
#32- JOAQUIN PHOENIX
Age: 37
Hometown: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Known for: To Die For, Gladiator, Walk the Line, I’m Still Here
Why he’s a JILF: Joaquin was born in Puerto Rico while his parents were traveling extensively with the religious cult, Children of God. His mother was born a New York Jew and his father Catholic. After his parents became disenchanted with the Children of God, Joaquin and his four siblings returned to the U.S and adopted the last name Phoenix to symbolize a new beginning. His parents struggled financially, so the 5 children performed on the street and in talent competitions to help raise money to survive. Eventually, the Phoenix children (Joaquin, River, Rain, and Summer) landed a Hollywood agent and started acting professionally in commercials and TV shows. Joaquin became an established child actor in the 80’s, but dropped the career to travel. It wasn’t until the death of his brother River that Joaquin returned to the public’s attention. Since then, Joaquin has been in and out of the Hollywood system. But when he’s in, Joaquin astonishes audiences with his raw acting style which can be seen in films such as U Turn, To Die For, Hotel Rwanda, Two Lovers, and Walk the Line. Look up for him in Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, The Master.
