On January 19th, Brooklyn-turned-Montreal comedian Robby Hoffman, will be going to The Joliette Prison For Women of Quebec… voluntarily. Hoffman and fellow comedian, Bianca Yates, will be performing at the prison’s first comedy show.

The event is by invitation only, and is very exclusive. Hoffman jokes the one-night only performance entitled Prison Break is, in fact, “invitation by incarceration.”

It has been a dream of Hoffman’s to perform at The Joliette Prison For Women (of Carla Homolka fame) for quite some time, but the jail initially was not very thrilled with the idea.

“After literally calling the prison every day for two months, I’ve finally gotten the green light- not without a month long security clearance and the promise to bring along someone who knows more French than I do,” Hoffman explains.

Robby Hoffman and Bianca Yates have made a name for themselves in the Montreal comedy circuit over the past few years, playing at The Women’s Festival. Fringe, and other local venues.

The women believe Joliette is the perfect setting for a show in the New Year.

“If there’s anyone with resolutions, it’s the women here. Moreover, if there’s anyone who could use a laugh, it’s these women- who are serving for mistakes they’ve made,” Hoffman says.

So what exactly can the prisoners expect from these ladies?

“It’s like Folsom but less Oz and more Thelma and Louise!”
