The hit off-Broadway play and subsequent best-selling coffee table book, Jewtopia will be rendered to celluloid with Jennifer Love Hewitt (The Ghost Whisperer, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and of course, Party of Five) slated to star. Ivan Sergei (Jack and Jill, The Opposite of Sex, The Break Up) has also signed on to the production.

Based on the comedic play written by Bryan Fogal and Sam Wolfson, Jewtopia follows two friends, one a gentile and the other a Jew, who want to woo women from the other’s religion.

The play originally opened in Los Angeles in 2003. In 2004, its off-Broadway run commenced with tremendous success. Jewtopia ran at the Westside Theatre in Manhattan for two and a half years. It has the distinction of being on of the top three most lucrative off-Broadway productions along with Stomp, and Blue Man Group.

What for the success, Fogal and Wolfson published a corresponding book, Jewtopia: The Chosen Book for the Chosen People inspired by the play in 2006.

Fogal will be at the helm as both director and producer of the film adaptation.

Let’s hope the Jewtopia’s success translates to the big-screen, at the very least for poor Jennifer Love Hewitt. What with The Ghost Whisperer being cancelled last year, Hewitt undoubtedly is in desperate need of gainful employ.

As yet, no release date has been announced for the production.
