Jake Gyllenhaal and fellow actor Michael Pena were on a ride-along with South Los Angeles police officers Wednesday evening as part of their research for an upcoming film, when they unexpectedly became witnesses in a gang related shooting

The shooting took place at Van Ness Park in the 5700 block of South 2nd Avenue. The actors and their police escort, Sgt. Tammy Bowen, witnessed the aftermath of what the LAPD have called a gang shooting.

The victim suffered from non-life-threatening injuries, having only been shot in the lip and arm. His name has not been released to the public. There haven’t been any suspects identified in the matter either.

Gyllenhaal and Pena were researching for their roles in the upcoming film “End of Watch”, following the lives of two longtime LAPD partners. Gyllenhaal has already been on a few ride-alongs for his role, but this is the first incidence in which he has encountered violent activity.

The LAPD have released a statement addressing the shooting. They explain that the park where the crime took place is popular amongst families, so they will up the late-night patrol in order to ensure the residents are protected.
