EXCLUSIVE: JSwipe Founder Opens Up About JDate Lawsuit

If you didn't know, JSwipe and JDate are not owned by the same people. The former was launched following the success of Tinder, providing contemporary Jews with an online dating experience that's adaptable and keeps up with their need-to-swipe-everything demands.

Aside from being a dating app - of which there are hundreds out there - and that they seek a young Jewish demographic, the two don't seem to have too much in common - content or aesthetic wise - that is, save for a single letter: J. And, as discovered by Forbes, JDate's parent company, Spark Networks, is currently suing JSwipe over their use of this letter.

Because apparently, JDate owns exclusive rights to it?

The company is also suing JSwipe for violating an existing patent that, “confidentially determines matches and notifies users of mutual matches in feelings and interests.” However, if JDate has a patent on matching people together using a confidential formula, they may want to also take aim at Tinder, match.com, and any other dating website that matches people up using a secret algorithm,

Speaking to JSwipe founder David Yarus, for the first time since our conversation with him last year, he notes that there are several Jewish dating companies that start with the letter J: JPeopleMeet, JWed, JMOM, JCrush, JMatch, JSingles, JMeet, JShalom, JZoog. He also mentions that JDate's subscribers have been down since JSwipe came to popularity, and that Spark Networks' stock is down 40% since its launch.

Obviously, none of the aforementioned companies have reached the success of JSwipe.

Now, a bit over a year since it started, JSwipe has some 375,000 subscribers. According to Yarus, even Rabbi Shmuley Boteach's niece got engage to a guy she met on the app some two weeks ago!

"I started JSwipe with one mission: to make finding Jewish love fast, fun, and free," says Yarus. "The idea of pay-to-play dating websites doesn't resonate with millennials, and there had been no innovation in the Jewish dating space for over a decade. Our 375,000+ users across 70 countries have shared incredible stories of love and friendship that all started with a swipe! We have great respect for those who came before us and others in the space. Really, we just love love! It appears that others in the space, who claim to care about the Jewish community, don't feel the same way."

As for JDate's accusations, Yarus is confident that they are unwarranted. "We believe their claims lack merit and we intend to defend our rights vigorously," he says.
