Ruth Handler, the Jewish-born creator of the Barbie doll and former President of Mattel Inc., was able to popularize the doll by dressing her up, giving Barbie tons of accessories to choose from, different dresses to wear, and even a boyfriend to play with, Ken. Handler saw the Barbie as a way for girls to be girls, and a way for them to reach for the stars.
“My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices,” she once said.
It's true. Women do have choices, like, for example, the choice whether or not to decapitate one's husband, or whether to brutally murder him in a bathtub scene reminiscent of the Dexter episode where (SPOILER) Rita gets killed by the Trinity Killer (see above). And while Handler probably wouldn't approve, she'd have to admit that positioning your Barbie as a cruel, sadistic murderer would be one little girl being "anything she wanted to be," even if her wish is to become the most notorious female serial killer in all the land.
Women don't have to be just house wives
Though of course, it isn't a little girl who's become an infamous photographer for taking high res photos of dark, sexually pervasive scenarios Barbie and co find themselves in. It's a Canadian photographer by the name of Mariel Clayton, whose been positioning Barbie dolls as cold-blooded killers for years now.
Though his pics do certainly speak volumes about how women are viewed and treated in society, commenting on age-old stereotypes, and breaking down the barriers that exist between genders.
Head over to the photographer's official website for more photos. I want to say #NSFW, but....it's Barbie.....
For more detailed photographs using only toys, check out this U.K. teenager's thorough recreation of the Holocaust, made entirely with original Lego pieces - save for Hitler's mustache. That, of course, was custom made.
