HAG SAMEACH!!!

Besides the generic Mazel Tov Bitch! glass that I'm sure you've seen circulating online, there isn't much glassware out there with a discernible Jewish theme, particularly one you could give as a Hanukkah gift.

Or at least, there weren't any, until The Unemployed Philosopher's Guild introduced the Jew's Glasses, four different sets of four glasses that highlight some of the best and the brightest icons in Jewish history.

Now, with these set of glasses, every "meh" meal with the mishpocheh can be a meeting of the minds! The sets feature Jewish Thinkers - Moses Maimonides, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Karl Marx, Hannah Arendt, Baruch Spinoza, - Jewish Artists - Lee Krasner, Amedo Modigliani, Marc Chagall, Man Ray, Camille Pissarro, - Jewish Writers - Isaac Bashevis Singer, Susan Sontag, Franz Kafka, Allen Ginsberg, Gertrude Stein, - and of course, Jewish Entertainers - Benny Goodman, Leonard Bernstein, Fanny Brice, Al Jolson, Harry Houdini.

We speak to the company's Jay Stern, and also its founder, Stephen Shaw, on their products, inspiration, and reasoning for selling all these Jewish-themed items. Needless to say, pretty much every one of them is comical, and all of them would serve as phenomenal Hanukkah gifts, even these:

Shalom Life: What is the mission of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild?

Jay Stern: Our mission is to sell funny, smart products to funny, smart people. We also like to honor the great figures from history who we admire, but in a fun way. We also donate a portion of our proceeds to worthy causes each year.

What kind of items do you sell?

Jay Stern: We sell high-brow novelty items: dolls and finger puppets featuring great philosophers, scientists, artists, historical figures; funny mints, sticky notes, pillboxes and magnet sets; all sorts of mugs, including a large line of mugs that transform when you add hot liquid to them.

Notable Jewish products include our Yiddish Proverbs mug, Meshuga Mints, Jews Glasses (a set of 4 glasses featuring famous Jewish thinkers and artists), and of course many of the personalities we make products around are Jewish: Einstein, Freud, Spinoza, Aleichem, Arendt, Moses, etc. Our Freudian Slippers, for example, are a big hit this time of year.

Where did get the inspiration to sell Jewish-themed products?

Jay Stern: Most of us in the office are Jewish. Our products reflect all areas of Western culture (science, history, art, literature, philosophy, religion) so it was only natural for us to end up making some Jewish-themed products. Jews tend to have a good sense of humor, which also helps.

Do you do anything special for Hanukkah?

Stephen Shaw: I light the candles with my sons and we make each other presents.

What does Hanukkah mean to you?

Stephen Shaw: Its another excuse to light candles and get together. I love it.

For more information, visit here. I've already placed my order for those Freudian slippers.
