The Iron Dome: The TAU Alumnus behind Israel’s Protective Miracle

Dr. Danny Gold, with a PhD in Engineering and Management from Tel Aviv University, and a former head of the IDF's Weapons and Technological R&D, has made one of the most significant contributions to Israeli livelihood by inventing the mobile anti-missile system known as Iron Dome. With his invention, Gold has helped save thousands of lives and, during the current operation, the Dome has intercepted more rockets than it has before, with a success rate of just under 90%.

Digital Warfare: TAU on the Frontline

Cyber attacks and hackers have consistently tried to penetrate Israeli security, with over 43 billion cyber attacks a day. Researchers from Tel Aviv University are paving the way to develop foolproof security technologies to ensure that such attacks cannot occur. Some 30 groups at TAU across five different faculties are looking to contribute their knowledge to such technologies. “In the ongoing cyber war, the best form of defense is pioneering technology,” says Prof. Yossi Azar, Head of TAU’s Blavatnik School of Computer Science. “At TAU we have one of the strongest and most diversified cyber teams in Israel.”

Super Glues & Smart Bandages – A New Generation of Life-Saving Adhesives Takes Form

TAU biomedical engineer Prof. Meital Zilberman is currently making breakthroughs in creating ways to wound healing in order to ease the suffering of Israeli soldiers and civilians. Alongside a team of researchers, Zilberman has focused on a project that involves a super glue for the skin, an innovative adhesive that could replace stitches as a more efficient way of treating wounds.

Nano-Sized Chip "Sniffs Out" Explosives Far Better than Trained Dogs

Researchers from Tel Aviv University are developing a pioneering sensor that detects hazardous materials in the air. This "revolutionary" electronic chip has nano-sized chemical sensors, developed by Prof. Fernando Patolsky of Tel Aviv University's Raymond and Beverly Sackler School of Chemistry and Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, in conjunction with Herzliya-based Tracense. These nanotechnology-inspired sensors pick up the scent of explosives even better than a detection dog's nose.

Expert Analysis / Israel-Gaza Conflict '14

A large number of academics and scholars aligned with Tel Aviv University have composed op-eds and academic pieces looking to bring a ceasefire, and/or are reflections of the ongoing conflict.

For these many initiatives, and more, Tel Aviv University continue to make significant positive changes for IDF soldiers, and also, for the people of Israel.
