Send Smells Through Your Smartphones & Tablets with Scent2You

The Israeli startup's company latest product, Scentasia, which sends scents via apps on your smartphones and devices, looks to revolutionize the way we receive smells

Here we are, well into the wondrous information age where technology rules all, and despite being able to develop robots, space glasses, and connect with people halfway cross the planet instantaneously, you still can't send the scent of your mama's famous brisket to your homesick sister teaching English in Korea.

Well, if Israeli entrepreneur Amos Porat has anything to do with it, not for long.

On April Fool’s Day, Google announced “Google Nose,” and while widely cast off as a joke, Amos Porat is dead serious when it comes to using computers to transmit scent. At the Elevator World Tour in Tel Aviv, he told the Times of Israel that “This is the real thing.”

His company, Scent2You, was the only one at the convention to have products dealing with smells.

While there are a number of smell systems, Porat says that his is different for several reasons. “Ours is the only one that can be controlled — dispensed and diffused — via an app.” The patented system is unique, he continued, as “no one else is doing anything even remotely like this. And while there are other mechanical scent systems on the market, that of Scent2You is much smaller and compact, making it perfect for use in a wide variety of devices, like electronic toys, tablets, and more.”

Whereas other systems use gases or alcohol to transmit odor - which many cannot tolerate - Porat’s product uses FDA-approved ingredients that are non-allergenic, non-alcoholic, and eco-friendly. The ingredients, he adds, are a closely guarded trade secret.

Scent2You’s product, Scentasia, may be used with PCs, Macs, and tablets using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB ports, or auxiliary ports, and makes use of scent cartridges with a distinct smell. “I see this as having a lot of educational applications,” added Porat.

To do so, Scent2You equips toys with Scentasia for kids to learn from different smells.

Porat has been showing his prototype to toy manufacturers, much to their delight. “We were at the New York Toy show earlier this year and we had one of the most popular booths there,” claimed Porat, citing a list of some of the world’s largest toy manufacturers who had expressed interest in the product-to some degree.

Several angel investors have already invested in Scent2You, but Porat would liked to raise a little more money. “I really think the time has come for something like this. We have so many apps for vision, voice and hearing, but none for smell. I believe we have the solution for this.”

Looks like the future has arrived.
