Last month, an elaborate tunnel road was shut down in Israel, causing mayhem, traffic, and confusion in Haifa.

Now, experts tell the AP that "The Carmel Mountain tunnels have been closed due to a hacker attack." According to a new report, in early September a trojan horse was injected to the tunnels’ surveillance system and caused severe system malfunctions. The company operating the tunnels had initially said it was a result of a "communications glitch."

For hours, one of the main roads in northern Israel (at Haifa) was shut down and now, almost a month later, experts claim that this incident was a result of a clever cyber attack.

According to one of the experts, a trojan horse was inserted into the surveillance cameras of the tunnels on September 8th, and caused damages which led to shutting down the tunnels, heavy road traffic in downtown Haifa and hundred thousands of dollars worth of damages. The cyber attack led to shutting down the tunnels for 20 minutes on September 8th, and for eight hours the next day.

The report states that these “clever hackers” are also the ones behind the attack on Haifa’s water system last April. It adds that the attack isn't sophisticated enough to be a foreign government’s work, such as Iran’s. The experts claim that Israel’s National Cyber Agency is aware of the case. They've refused to comment at this point.

On the other hand, the company running the tunnels state it was a bug in the “monitoring system, which was fixed in the fastest way possible” and that the system “isn’t connected to outbound systems so it can’t be a hacker attack”.

Moreover, the Israeli Electricity Company told the AP that their servers are the targets of some 6,000 unique attacks each second (that’s almost 16 billion a month). To their point of view, preparation is key and they have special security teams divided into two teams: the red team trying to break in and the blue team working on protecting any breaches found. This is very common in this day and age and many other organizations, and even entire nations, are preparing for when the time comes.
