In 2009, Berkeley-based Akiva Resnikoff was just another working class office employee, drinking several cups of coffee to make it through the day. One day he was at his desk with his favourite duo sitting tantalizingly in front of him: a cup of coffee, and a cookie.

As he dipped his cookie into the piping hot cup of java, he arrived at an epiphany: why isn't there one product that merges both of these together?

Resnikoff decided to delve further into his question through research, and discovered that, as 3-5pm is 'classic office crash' time, most patrons of his favourite coffee shops were ordering both a coffee and cookie, particularly those who arrived during that two-hour window.

Resnikoff, armed with a pastry background (he received his culinary certification years back), experience in food and beverage sales, and a sincere fondness for puns, made his way to his mother's kitchen and created his first-ever 'fully functional' cookie: the 'Awaken Baked', an espresso cookie whose active ingredients are sea salt and organic coffee. It would be the first cookie he'd sell as founder of the Cookie Department.

Shalom Life had a chance to catch up with Resnikoff on his company's progress, being sold in every David's Tea in the United States, and what exactly is a fully functional cookie.
